Yo Soy Dominicano

Pienso que todo comenso con www.DominicanBlogger.com... (Shall I say we are Trend Setters)...

Have you ever wondered who you are?

From time to time i get a glimpse of who I am when I over hear conversations between my parents, aunts, uncles, and friends but I have never sat down with my parents to explore the possibilities of getting a clear answer. I'm sure that while I was in elementary, middle school, high school, or even college I may have come across an assignment that required me to find such things on my own. To be honest with you... I can't remember too many things... So here i am trying to get a glimpse of who I am down on the internet of all places...

OK... here are the basics of what I know of my "Family Tree"... My Great Grandparents from my granfathers side migrated from Spain to the Dominican Republic in the late 1800's early 1900's. My Grandfather, a man who passed away when my father was about 17, was a stuborn macho man. I'm not too sure if he got that trait before or after he arived to the Dominican Republic. My grandmothers parents also migrated from Spain to the Dominican Republic where she met my grandfather, married and had a total of 10 children. My great grandparents from both of my mothers side were natives of the Dominican Republic. I'm not too sure if they were in fact taino indians but i'm certain that my roots from my moms side date back to the Columbus era on the Island of Hispanola. A breif description of these taino indians would be: The Arawak/Taino society was basically a very gentle culture. It was characterized by happiness, friendliness and a highly organized hierarchical, paternal society, and a lack of guile. Each society was a small kingdom and the leader was called a cacique. At the time of Columbus there were five different kingdoms on the island of Hispaniola. The Indians practiced polygamy. Most men had 2 or 3 wives, but the caciques had as many as 30. It was a great honor for a woman to be married to a cacique. Not only did she enjoy a materially superior lifestyle, but her children were held in high esteem.

My father came to the United States in 1967 at the age of 22. He worked various jobs as a dishwasher at restaurants and a doorman downtown. In 1969 he started as a Janitor for Nynex Telephone Company where he was promoted as a Technician while attending George Washington HS in Washington Hieghts, NY for his GED.My mom was a country girl who lived in a town called Bonao, RD. Not having any formal education, she led a modest life with the love and care from my grandparents. I believe that is what has our family together to this day.

My parents married in 1974. The way in which they met is something that you would only hear about in that era. On a trip back home, my father noticed a young lady while traveling down a road with one of his close friends. He said, "Who's that?" Little did he know that he would soon meet his future wife along with her parents in less then two hours. It was a love affair at first site. Traveling back and forth between the US and DR, my father had successfully brought his wife and two kids in 1980. My sister was born on November 14, 1977 and I was born on March 13, 1979... almost a year and a half apart to the tee. My younger sister was born on April 10, 1986.

So there it is... some basic history on who I am and where I come from.

Y Puedo Decir... YO SOY DOMINICANO!
